Venice is a city, situated in the northern part of Italy. It is the capital of the Veneto region. As of 1st January, 2004 Venice had a population of 271,251. Along with Padua, the city is a part of the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area. "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Bridges" and "The City of Light" are a few of Venice's nicknames. The city expands across a number of small islands in the vicinity of the damp Venetian Lagoon, situated along the Adriatic Sea in the northeast of Italy. The saltwater lagoon covers a long stretch of area along the shoreline starting from the mouth of the Po River in the south and the Piave River in the north.
The Venetian Republic has always been a major sea power and the battle ground for many a Crusade, and also a very important center spice trade and hence, a focal point of commerce of the region. Venice has been witness to the fascinating works of art and architecture during the era of Renaissance. Although, the city-state has lost much of its power and position after the decline of the Byzantine Empire, it continues to hold an important position in the country.
The Sestieris are the main administrative divisions of Venice. The city is divided into the six districts of Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, San Marco and Castello along with the San Pietro di Castello and Sant'Elena. There are Gondolas, which serve the city with a large piece of metal at their front portion complete with six pins pointing forward and one pointing backward. Each of these pins symbolizes one of the administrative divisions or Sestieri.
